CONTACTS: Adrian Coppage, Assistant Wetland Habitat Coordinator, 608-228-7470. Mailing address: Department of Natural Resources, WM/6, PO Box 7921, Madison, WI 53706. Subject: Public Notice, Invasive Plant Control Project. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources plans to treat 176.1 acres of non-native common reed (Phragmites australis var. australis) and non-native cattail (Typha x glauca & Typha angustifolia) in wetlands on public lands and waters throughout the State. Applications will occur at the following locations: Mullet Creek Wildlife Area (50.4 acres), Sheboygan Marsh Wildlife Area (34 acres), Mack Wildlife Area (28.2 acres), Green Bay West Shores Wildlife Area (9.7 acres), Navarino Wildlife Area (1.3 acres), Horicon Marsh Wildlife Area (26.1 acres), Theresa Wildlife Area (16.6 acres), Allenton Wildlife Area (0.2 acres), Jackson Marsh Wildlife Area (9.6 acres). Treatment would be conducted on public lands and waters only. Non-native common reed (Phragmites australis var. australis) and cattail (Typha x glauca & Typha angustifolia) are invasive plants that overtake native vegetation while providing little value as wildlife habitat in wetlands. This project is an attempt to control invasive species, improve wildlife habitat and improve public access. Treatment would be done chemically with a commercial herbicide containing the active ingredient Imazapyr in an aquatic formula, along with an aquatic-approved surfactant. Application would be done from the air and the treatment would occur between August 1st to September 13th. The Department will not conduct any spraying during the early teal hunting season between September 1st and the 9th. This project is an equivalent analysis action under chapter NR105.20 Wis. Adm. Code. The Department also prepared an environmental assessment (EA) that analyzes Phragmites treatment. The EA is available upon request by contacting Adrian Coppage using the means listed below.
